Antoni Gaudi was the visionary architect who sadly died in 1926 having been hit by a tram in Barcelona. Its said he was on his way to his daily confession when the accident happened.
Gaudi was the architect behind some of Barcelona's most famous landmarks, including La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà - La Pedrera, Casa Vicens and Park Güell which are some of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions and with it, they attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to the city to enjoy his remarkable talents.
I say hundreds of thousands but the reality is its actually millions as its suggested that La Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's crowning glory, which is still unfinished, by its self attracts around 20-million people to see it from the outside with around 4.5 million that buy tickets to enjoy the inside of the magnificent property as well.
The Sagrada Familia's original completion date was expected to be 2026, but with covid delays and slow down in funding, they have pushed back the expected date of completion and haven't published an updated one yet.
Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, which is known as 'La Pedrera' due to it looking like an open stone quarry receive around 1,000,000 visitors each per year that come to enjoy the properties unique designs. One of the incredible things about Gaudi properties is that both children and adults can enjoy them. Due to Gaudi's incredible mind and his process of including nature in his designs, the properties also capture the minds of young ones due to the colours and textures used to bring the properties together. Whether its the shape of a door handle or the colour of a wall, children find the properties fascinating as well and there aren't many architects that can bring families together to experience and enjoy quite like Gaudi could! Just imagine the kids arriving at Casa Batlló and seeing the multicoloured front wall along with the shapes used. It will be like nothing they've seen before and that will capture their attention. Casa Milà - La Pedrera is similar - how many other houses will they see with front balconies looking like that! The properies instantly engage you!
Casa Vicens is probably the least famous of Gaudi's properties in Barcelona, even though it was one of his first and certainly not due to it being any less interesting as its incredible to look at. Casa Vicens always reminds me of a gingerbread house! For adults it's amazing to see, so just imagine that reaction through the eyes of a child seeing it. A real house and the colours and styles used in side. Casa Vicens is now owned by Morabanc, an Andorran bank.
Park Güell, the famous park in Barcelona receives an estimated 12,000,000 visitors each year. During the summer months that works out to around 30,000 people per day that enjoy this piece of outdoor art! Again, its a place to take the kids and for them to enjoy as well, with its incredible monumental zone with its gingerbread houses, its mosaic animals, its columns, it spaces and the famous Dragon staircase and Serpentine bench as well as the incredible views of the city.
I think there is something quite special about a place that can genuinely entertain families. Not just where parents take kids to keep them occupied, but where the parents can enjoy themselves too.
The properties are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites under Gaudi's listing.
This goes to show that 100 years after Gaudi died, his properties and designs attract millions of visitors to Barcelona each year and that means the revenue he generates for Barcelona is quite spectacular, with it feeding in to accommodation, local bars and restaurants, taxi services, gift shops and so many other ways.
Antoni Gaudi was a man that during his life created incredible properties with his amazing visions. Gaudi after his death now brings revenue to the local area from all over the world as tourists travel to see his designs and to enjoy them in all their glory.
