About Barcelona Aquarium

Barcelona Aquarium is home to aquatic habitats from the Mediterranean and through to the warmer tropical waters of the Caribbean. It is spread across 21 different aquariums and is home to around 11,000 animals from more than 400 different species.

The habitats are carefully divided to reflect natural environments such as the Mediterranean Sea, tropical oceans, and deeper open waters. The aquarium includes 12 Mediterranean aquariums and 7 tropical ones which also have interactive exhibits and educational experiences to make visits more enjoyable.

One of the most impressive features is the 80-metre-long underwater tunnel, where visitors can walk through the Oceanarium and see sharks, eels, fish and rays swimming overhead.

The aquarium is also home to a colony of Humboldt penguins, which are often fed around 11:30 and 16:30, which is a great experience to see if you time your visit right.

Aquarium Highlights:

  • The Oceanarium: A large tank with over 4m litres of water, home to sharks, rays, sunfish and other species.
  • Planeta Acqua: Home to penguins, jellyfish, piranhas and more.
  • Tropical Aquariums: Home to exotic fish and colourful coral reefs and sharks, amongst others.
  • Mediterranean Aquariums: Home to underwater plants such as slimy algae and the fish that live naturally amongst it.
  • Underwater Tunnel: The underwater tunnel where you can experience the sea life from a different angle.

Marine Life and Exhibits

The aquarium is designed around the different global ecosystems, allowing species to live in environments similar to their natural habitats. You can explore marine life from the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Red Sea, and even colder regions such as the Antarctic.
