About Lluís Domènech i Montaner

Lluis Domènech i Montaner was a Catalan architect born December 1850 and died December 1923,.

Domènech i Montaner stands as a luminary in the world of architecture, along side the greats such as Antoni Gaudi and Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Domènech i Montaner's designs and contributions to the Modernisme movement left an permanent mark on the city of Barcelona and the wider architectural world as a whole.

His father, Pere Domènech i Saló, was a leading book binder in the first half of the 19th century. His mother, Maria Montaner i Vila came from a prominent family.

Domènech i Montaner attended the prestigious Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona, where he studied architecture. It was during this formative period that he developed a deep interest in the convergence of art and architecture, which he would use during his career.

Domènech i Montaner wasn't just an architect, he was also an historian, a writer, a teacher, a politician, and a typography designer.

Lluis Domènech i Montaner is responsible for some of Barcelona's most iconic buildings and most visited tourist landmarks including some listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites which are open to the public, including:

Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site - UNESCO World Heritage Site (see ticket details)

Domènech i Montaner built the Sant Pau Hospital between 1902 and 1930. A masterpiece of Modernisme architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Domènech i Montaner's built the hospital on an old medieval hosptial site. His design inention was to prioritize the well-being of patients by letting the architectural and natural beauty try and help to heal the patients spirits. He incorporated lush gardens, natural light, and intricate mosaics. The 16 colourful pavilions and ornate detailing show of his dedication to detail as well as his wanting to include the sense of joy in the architecture to try and help the patients heal. Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site was made a UNESCO world Heritage Site in 1997 and is one of our best selling tickets.

Palau de la Música Catalana - UNESCO WORLD Heritage Site (see ticket details)

Palau de la Música Catalana, the incredible Catalan Art Nouveau masterpiece designed by renowned architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Domènech i Montaner designed and built the property between 1905 and 1908 for Orfeó Català and was financed by popular subscription. The Palau has hosted world premieres and the Concert Auditorium is one of the most distinctive in the world, let alone just Spain.
