About the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA)
Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) opened in 1995 with only 18 works on display, and around 30,000 people visited during the opening weekend.
The collection has since grown to more than 6,000 works, primarily covering art from the second half of the 20th century to the present day. It includes paintings, sculptures, photography, video, installations and other forms of contemporary art.
The building is an attraction in its own right. It was designed by American architect Richard Meier and features a distinctive white façade, large windows and bright open spaces that contrast with the historic buildings surrounding it in the Raval district and Gothic Quarter. The museum has been declared a 'Cultural Heritage Site' by the Government of Catalonia.
The MACBA collection includes works by artists such as:

MACBA offers free entry on the first Sunday of every month. There are also free-entry periods on selected Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings during the summer. Visitors under 16 can also enter free of charge.
