About the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA)

Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) is in the Raval district and the building was designed by American architect Richard Meier and in keeping with its name, the building itself is a prime example of contemporary architecture.

The MACBA (which was declared a 'Cultural Heritage Site' by the Government of Catalonia) collection is spread across multiple rooms, each with their own period collection and primarily focuses on the second half of the 20th century onwards (1940's - 1970's) and includes works by both local Catalan artists as well as international ones and offers paintings, sculptures, photography, video and other installations.

The permanent collection consists of around 3000 pieces from hundreds of artists including:

  • Antoni Llena
  • Vito Acconci
  • Marcel Broodthaers
  • Gego
  • Eduardo Chillida
  • Andrea Fraser, amongst many others.

The MACBA also hosts various temporary exhibitions throughout the year as well as offering workshops, hosting conferences, film projects and other performances.
