About Barcelona Cathedral

Barcelona Cathedral (La Seu) is built on the foundations of the old Basilica and Romanesque Cathedral that was previously there. Construction of the current cathedral started in 1298 and it was completed around the mid 15-century, during the rule of King Alfonso V of Aragon.

The official title of the cathedral is the 'Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia' with Saint Eulalia being the co-patron saint of Barcelona.

It has beautiful gothic architecture including its spires, amazing rooftop views of the city and quiet cloisters to enjoy.

The central nave has tall Gothic columns that rise into vaulted ceilings. Compared to other European cathedrals, the interior may feel smaller, but the attention to detail is what stands out.

It features carved stone, ornate chapels, and soft light coming through the stained glass windows.

Many visitors are surprised by how calm the cathedral feels compared to the busy streets just outside. Even in peak season, there are moments where the sound drops completely, especially in the cloister where most people tend to slow down or sit for a while.

Cathedral Highlights

  • The Cloister and the Geese: One of the most unique features of the cathedral is its cloister. It feels like a quiet courtyard hidden inside the city with stone arches, small gardens, palm trees and a central fountain. It is also where the cathedral's thirteen famous geese live which are kept in reference to Saint Eulalia, one of Barcelona’s patron saints. The cloister is also one of the best places to relax during your visit, especially on warm days when it offers shade and a calmer atmosphere.
  • The Rooftop: You can enjoy views across the Gothic Quarter towards the Eixample district and even the Mediterranean on clear days. You can also see the bell towers, the lateral pinnacles and the cimborio crowned by the Holy Cross which helps to let natural light into the cathedral.
  • The Golden Fleece Choir Stalls: The intricate golden fleece choir stalls are designed in a Catalan Gothic style. The shields were painted by Juan de Borgoña more than 500 years ago and represent the knights of the order of the Golden Fleece.
  • The Chapter Hall: The Historic Chapter Hall was originally used as a soup kitchen for the poor. It has since been converted into a museum and is now home to various pieces of art and other artefacts.
  • The Saint Christ of Lepanto's Chapel: Constructed in 1407 by Arnau Bargués, the chapel was actually the Chapterhouse until 1676, when Saint Olegarius was canonized and it became his mausoleum.
  • The Crypt: The cathedral has a crypt underneath it where the relics of Saint Eulalia are kept and preserved. You can see the crypt to pay respect to the patron saint of Barcelona.
