About Casa Vicens

Casa Vicens was Antoni Gaudí's first major commission and the first house he designed. It was commissioned by Manuel Vicens i Montaner, a local stockbroker, as a summer home for his family. It is also where the house gets its name from.

Construction took place between 1883 and 1885, when Gaudí was still at the beginning of his career. It was an early example of the architectural style that Gaudí would continue to develop throughout his career.

Gaudí drew inspiration from different sources for Casa Vicens and it includes traditional Catalan architecture, as well as influences from Islamic art and Japanese design.

The exterior of Casa Vicens is known for its colourful ceramic tiles, decorative patterns and ornamental ironwork. Gaudí also used natural shapes and geometric designs throughout the house, elements that would appear in different forms in some of his later buildings, including Casa Milà - La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, both of which are also very popular attractions in Barcelona.

Casa Vicens was later expanded between 1925 and 1927 by architect Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez. The extension almost doubled the size of the house and included a new interior staircase. The garden was also expanded during this period.

It remained a private residence for more than a century until 2014, when MoraBanc, an Andorran bank, acquired it. The bank carried out a restoration which took in to account that it was going to become a house museum and cultural space, so the restoration focused on recovering Gaudí's original design as they didn't want to impact that, while adapting the building for visitors.

After three years of restoration work, Casa Vicens opened to the public as a house museum in November 2017.
