History of Casa Vicens

Manuel Vicens i Montaner, a stock and currency broker, was the person that commissioned Casa Vicens and Gaudí was only 30 years old at the time, so was just starting to make a name for himself in the architectural world. The house was designed in the midst of the Catalan Renaixença, a period of cultural and artistic revival in Catalonia and Vicens i Montaner wanted to use it as a summer garden house.

Gaudí drew inspiration from a variety of sources for Casa Vicens, which can be seen in the design of the building which incorporates elements of traditional Catalan architecture, as well as influences from Islamic art and Japanese design. The façade is adorned with intricate ceramic tiles, colourful mosaics, and ornamental ironwork, all of which create a visually stunning and unique exterior and something that Gaudi went on to use in multiple of his properties such as Casa Milà - La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, both of which are located fairly closely to Casa Vicens and also open to the public and are actually amongst Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions.

In 1925 Casa Vicens underwent an extension that was designed by Joan Baptista Serra de Martinez, but didn't impact Gaudi's work and then later on a garden surrounding the property was also added.

Casa Vicens actually remained a private residence until as recently as 2014 at which point it was acquired by MoraBanc, a Andorran bank. The bank completed an extensive restoration project on the property and it was opened to the public in 2017, allowing visitors to experience the beauty and architectural brilliance of Gaudí's early work.

Morabanc's renovation project took into account the fact it was to become a museum and a cultural space but didn't want to significantly impact Gaudi's space but preserve it for all to enjoy. They enlisted Elias Torres, Jose Antonio Martinez Lapeña and David Garcia to create a modern staircase that would allow visitors to flow through the property and get around inside. A lift was also added giving access to all floors which has made the property more accessible for visitors with disabilities.

Casa Vicens now consists of a ground floor with an area to welcome visitors, then the first and second floors show the permanent collection and temporary exhibits.
