What You Can See at the Picasso Museum Barcelona

The museum holds one of the largest collections in the world. Some of the most popular works on show include:

  • First Communion (1896)
  • Science and Charity (1897)
  • Las Meninas series (the collection)
  • Prints, oil paintings, drawings, ceramics and photos.

About The Picasso Museum

The museum is home to the third largest collection of Picasso's work in the world with around 4,000 pieces that it rotates, so it is just behind the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Picasso Museum, Paris.

It is in the El Born neighbourhood in a group of five separate but interconnected buildings which also creates a maze-like layout, adding to the character of the museum.

The museum was founded in 1963 by Jaume Sabartés, a close friend and secretary of Picasso, with the artist’s approval. Picasso spent his formative years in Barcelona while studying at the La Llotja art academy, where his father also taught, which makes the city an important part of his artistic story.

The Barcelona collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, engravings, sketches and illustrated books, amongst others. Picasso's wife, Jaqueline Picasso, also dedicated a range of ceramics to the museum in 1982.
