About Joan Miró & the Museum
The museum features a range of works by one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Joan Miró, paying tribute to his unique style which is marked by vibrant colours, dreamlike imagery, and a deep connection to his Catalan roots.
The building was designed by his close friend, architect Josep Lluis Sert, and was opened in 1975. Sert designed the building to blend in with the surroundings, following Miró's own passion of creating a relationship between art and nature.
The museum owns a collection that covers most of Miró's career from his early works that were influenced by Catalan landscapes, through to his later works when his mind was open to more expression. Miró himself also donated multiple pieces to the foundation.
The museum doesn't only display Miró's works, it also features works by other artists and regularly hosts exhibitions throughout the year.
Highlights include:
- La Masia: The painting portrays the family farmhouse in Mont-roig del Camp and shows Miro’s early style and his deep attachment to his homeland.
- L'or de l'atzur: A large mural created exclusively for the museum's foundation and celebrates the spirit of creativity and freedom.
- Sculpture Garden: The museum has an outdoor sculpture garden which displays the works in a natural setting.
- Pintura Mural: A piece that covers an entire wall and features a dynamic blend of bold colours, abstract shapes, and symbolic elements that reflect Miró's surrealist aesthetic.
- Constel·lacions: A collection of 23 small-scale paintings that show Miró's fascination with the cosmos.
Miró was born 20 April 1893 in Barcelona and died 25 December 1983. He was known for using imaginative and symbolic elements in his works, along with playful use of colour, shapes and lines.
He had shown a keen interest in art as a child and attended the 'Royal Academy of Fine Arts' of San Jorge in Barcelona before moving on to the 'Acadèmia Gali'. He moved to Paris and became involved with the Surrealist movement and also met Picasso.
He became known for his use of 'automatism', a technique where the artist allows their hand to move freely without a specific plan but simply following subconscious suggestions.
