About The Picasso Museum, Barcelona
The Picasso Museum Barcelona is the third largest collection of Picasso's work in the world. It has around 4000 pieces in its collection, just behind the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Picasso Museum, Paris.
The museum was founded by Jamie Sabartés in 1963 and is one of Barcelona's major attractions in the art scene. Jamie, a close friend of Picasso's, opened the museum whilst Picasso was still alive and with his blessing, as he wanted all to be able to enjoy his works.
It is housed in a spectacular building in the El Born neighbourhood and is a group of separate buildings that are interconnected which also creates a labyrinth effect, adding to the character of the museum.
The Barcelona collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, engravings, sketches and illustrated books, amongst others. Picasso's wife, Jaqueline Picasso, also dedicated a range of ceramics to the museum in 1982.
It is a must for art lovers, but especially Picasso fans, as the museum was important to the artist having spend several years of his youth in the city as he studied at the prestigious La Llotja art academy, which also had other Picasso family ties as his Father was a professor there.
