About the Palau de la Música Catalana

The Palau de la Música Catalana was commissioned by the Orfeó Català, a cultural organisation founded to promote Catalan music and singing. Construction began in 1905 and the building officially opened in 1908.

It was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the leading architects of the Catalan Modernisme movement, who also created the nearby Hospital de Sant Pau. Unlike many historic buildings that have become museums, the Palau is still in active use as a concert hall and is one of Barcelona’s most important cultural venues.

The building underwent a major restoration project between 1983 and 2004, helping preserve its architectural details while improving facilities for modern performances. In 1997 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Works of Lluís Domènech i Montaner” listing.
